Designing the Perfect Ensuite

If your home is your castle, then your ensuite is your high tower.

An ensuite is a place of comfort, privacy, warmth, safety, and cleanliness. Designing your perfect ensuite often takes on a more personal meaning because it’s such an important room in the house. In the first room, you walk into in the morning and the last one you’re in at night a perfectly designed ensuite can set your mood for the entire day and put you in a state of ease and comfort just before bed. It might seem like designing your dream ensuite is a daunting task but here are 6 ways you can get the most out of the space.

Identify your needs

Have a good long think about what you will actually use this room for. Do you need or want it to be another fully functioning bathroom complete with a tub, double shower, and double vanities? Do you even have space for that? Try to picture a day-to-day routine in your ensuite and list the things you will do. Things like – showering, doing makeup, shaving, and getting dressed will come to mind but think about if you are using it alone or with your partner and if you both need to get ready at the same time.

Utilise natural light

Natural light can bring warmth and ambience to a space that just can’t be achieved through artificial lighting. Think about how you can incorporate some natural light into the space, whether it be from skylights, or large or small windows. Walking into your ensuite with a nice morning glow from the sun is a feeling that will stick with you for the entire day.

Minimise clutter

Nothing makes a space feel smaller than having too many ‘things’ lying around. Things like hair dryers, curling irons, hairbrushes, razors, toothbrushes and other bits and pieces can clog up spaces and make them feel dirty and cluttered. You can minimise clutter by having a place for everything and everything in its place. Storage, cupboards, and draws are a bathroom’s best friend so make sure you have enough.

Choose a colour scheme

Your ensuite should feel like a seamless expansion of your house, so keep this in mind when picking a colour scheme. You ideally want colours that match or complement the rest of your house. You don’t want to walk into your ensuite and be hit with a jarring contrast of colours that come out of nowhere.

Maximise space

Sometimes less is more. Just because you can fit a double shower, tub, and huge vanity inside your ensuite doesn’t mean you should put it in there. Nothing screams luxury and tranquillity like a large open space.

Practicality is king

One of the keys to life is to have a practically functional space around you. Think about things like power points in the right spot, a rubbish bin where it’s needed or a towel rack next to the shower. Not to mention the lights in front of the mirror!
